15+ million people in Yemen go hungry each day. 3 million have had to run from their homes. People are calling this the worst humanitarian crisis in human history. It’s becoming the worst famine in 100 years.
We are halfway across the world. No matter what we do, we cannot stop the fighting and the reasons that they are starving in the first place.
We can feed them, though. And we don’t have to just drop off bags of rice and lentils. What if we could actually bring them food that was still warm, ready to eat? How about fresh bread?
Well guess what, we’re already doing that. All you have to do is help us. In August 2018, Humanity for Relief and Development's Mercy Bakery opened its doors and began working hard to bake bread for the starving families in Yemen.
It was a free bakery, baking bread for the starving families of Yemen.
In Sana’a, Yemen, people flocked to the new location, and came away with bread for their families. A kitchen was added next door within months offering meat, sauce and rice packets.
Now families in that neighbourhood can get a fresh meal of fried chicken, rice and sauce, and fresh, warm bread straight from the oven.
Consider how much of a delight it is for your mother to not have to cook and enjoy a nice meal. How much more joy must there be for a struggling Yemeni mother, to have food prepared and ready to eat with her whole family.
This is the difference between dry goods packets, and fresh-cooked food. A starving mother may have just enough energy to hold her child, let alone get up and cook for him.
This is why we wanted to go a step further, to actually prepare the food. We know the people, and we know the situation. The workers that run our locations are orphans from Yemen, intimately aware of the hard life that faces their people.
It is a labor of love and we don’t wanna stop doing it.
Today, as a result of your ongoing support, we have 4 Mercy Bakery locations open across Yemen and are producing 14,400 pieces of bread DAILY.
In 2020 alone, we were able to feed more than 100,000 starving brothers and sisters through your support.
